Molecular dynamics studies of ultrafast laser-induced nonthermal melting

چکیده
Molecular Dynamics (MD) is employed to investigate nonthermal melting triggered by coherent phonon excitation in bismuth telluride, which has Peierls distortion in the lattice structure. Results showed that the structural distortion caused by coherent phonons appears as early as 80 fs, while it takes several picoseconds for the whole phononexcited area to evolve into a liquid state. It was also found that the temperature in the phonon-excited area rises quickly within tens of femtoseconds, while the rest of the lattice remains at the initial temperature even after several picoseconds, which is separated from the high temperature region across a thin transition area. This phenomenon is analogous to the heat transfer across a solid–liquid interface, even though in our case there is no abrupt solid-liquid interface between the cold lattice and the quasiliquid.

Signatures of nonthermal melting
Intense ultrashort laser pulses can melt crystals in less than a picosecond but, in spite of over thirty years of active research, for many materials it is not known to what extent thermal and nonthermal microscopic processes cause this ultrafast phenomenon. Here, we perform ab-initio molecular-dynamics simulations of silicon on a laser-excited potential-energy surface, exclusively revealing no...

Ultrafast crystal-to-liquid phase transition induced by femtosecond pulse laser excitation is an interesting material's behavior manifesting the complexity of light-matter interaction. There exist two types of such phase transitions: one occurs at a time scale shorter than a picosecond via a nonthermal process mediated by electron-hole plasma formation; the other at a longer time scale via a th...
متن کاملFemtosecond x-ray measurement of ultrafast melting and large acoustic transients.
Time-resolved x-ray diffraction with ultrashort ( approximately 300 fs), multi-keV x-ray pulses has been used to study the femtosecond laser-induced solid-to-liquid phase transition in a thin crystalline layer of germanium. Nonthermal melting is observed to take place within 300-500 fs. Following ultrafast melting we observe strong acoustic perturbations evolving on a picosecond time scale.

The existence of nonthermal, ultrafast phase transitions after strong femtosecond laser excitation has been demonstrated in several materials such as silicon [1–3], gallium arsenide [3–6], indium antimonide [7], and carbon [8]. It is accepted that such transitions are induced by a softening of the lattice structure due to the generation of a very high density electron-hole plasma, as first prop...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics studies of ultrafast laser-induced phase and structural change in crystalline silicon
In this work, thermodynamic phenomena in crystalline silicon irradiated by an ultrafast laser pulse were studied using the method of molecular dynamics simulations. The Stillinger–Weber potential was used to model the crystalline silicon. The temperature development in silicon when heated by an ultrafast laser pulse was tracked. Melting and resolidification processes and the resulting structura...
